GLYCEMIC index

The glycemic index is a measure of the rate at which food is broken down and absorbed into the blood stream. The higher the glycemic index, the more rapid this process is. Foods should be chosen with low to moderate glycemic indices, so as to minimize the insulin response, and in so doing, increase the amount of fat used as a fuel source. Cortisol is a catabolic stress hormone. Although it acts as a natural analgesic, it has a negative effect on protein synthesis. High levels of coritsol are concurrent with a loss in muscle tissue. This is a double edged sword, for as you lose muscle, your metabolic rate drops, and as your metabolic rate drops, fat levels increase. Fat has an ability to convert the inactive form of cortisol to the active form. Active cortisol promotes fat deposition especially around the abdomen. Fat around the abdomen is and indicator and precursor of heart disease.

INSULIN

Insulin is the hormone that facilitates the storage of glucose in the muscle and liver. However, it also directly inhibits the use of fat as a fuel source. It is practically impossible to burn fat in a high insulin environment. Carbohydrates directly impact the release of insulin, in accordance with their relative glycemic indices. There is, however, another hormone, which reacts conversely to the levels of insulin in the body, and enables the body to burn fat more efficiently. This hormone is called Glucagon. Insulin also has an adverse lowering action on adrenalin and noradrenalin, lessening the bodies ability to mobilize fat.

CORTISOL

Cortisol is a catabolic stress hormone. Although it acts as a natural analgesic, it has a negative effect on protein synthesis. High levels of coritsol are concurrent with a loss in muscle tissue. This is a double edged sword, for as you lose muscle, your metabolic rate drops, and as your metabolic rate drops, fat levels increase. Fat has an ability to convert the inactive form of cortisol to the active form. Active cortisol promotes fat deposition especially around the abdomen. Fat around the abdomen is and indicator and precursor of heart disease.

FAT

There is more to fat than one would initially think. Most people merely see it as unattractive lard sitting in the places you do not want it. However this seemingly innocuous compound has interesting traits. I will try to simplify this as best as I can. Fat produces an enzyme called aromatase. This enzyme converts testosterone to oestrogen. Now oestrogen has a significant ability to increase body fat deposition. And, more FAT – more AROMATASE, more AROMATASE – more OESTROGEN, more OESTROGEN, more FAT, and so on. But it gets worse! When Oestrogen becomes elevated it causes a negative feedback through the HPTA (Hypothalmic Pituitary Testicular Axis)or in women the HPOA (Hypothalimic Pituitary Ovarian Axis). This causes a drop in endogenous (produced by the body) testosterone. Now to sum this up, you have lower testosterone, more Oestrogen, more Fat and more Aromatse causing a downward spiral ending up with unsightly body fat, potential heart disease, diabetes, diminished sex drive or impotence, depression and host of other things too numerous to mention.

THYROID

This is going to annoy a lot of people as human beings are generally psychologically inept. How many times have you heard a fat person going on about their under-active thyroid? The problem with this is that it is 95% of the time a self fulfilling prophecy. Here me out. The body runs at a temperature of between 36 and 37 degrees Celsius, and the thyroid hormones regulate body temperature. Let’s get scientific A newborn baby has a low mass to surface ratio, and loses heat easily. To explain, let’s take a cup of hot coffee, take a teaspoon’s worth of coffee out of the cup. Which cools down first? I hope you all said the teaspoon!!! Back to our fat person, they have significantly increased their mass to surface ratio, plus they have increased their insulation with all these layers of fat. The thyroid thus has to compensate, or else they will be running at a life threatening body temperature. Thus lower levels of T3 and T4 (Thyroid hormnes), Thus we can conclude that Thyroid levels are lowered because they are fat, and not that the person is fat because their thyroid levels are low

CELLULITE

Possibly the greatest myths pertain to cellulite. I’ve heard that it’s caused by caffeine, the lymphatic system, poor lymphatitic drainage, toxins, etc. People have tried seaweed wraps, deep tissue massage, detox – starvation eating and God knows what other snake oil remedies, all of which is utter, utter Bulls**t. Cellulite is FAT!! – deal with it. The undulating appearance is created by three things: One – Uneven dispersion of fat receptors, Two – have you ever tried to stuff mash potatoes into a stocking and get an even appearance? Three – They are too Goddamn fat!!!. Ever seen a competitive, female bodybuilder, with cellulite? – NO, Why? – because she has three% body fat ie. NO FAT – NO CELLULITE. Stop wasting money on all this other nonsense. The amount most women spend on this crap, they could all afford a competent personal trainer, and a proper eating and supplement protocol. Look at the photo’s of my wife and see if you can spot any cellulite. I offer an open challenge to all these magazines you find on the shelf, to prove me wrong with proper double blind university studies which prove to the contrary. Enough of that for now.

GLUCAGON

Glucagon is a hormone that aids the body in mobilizing the last remaining glycogen stores from the liver and muscles for energy. When glycogen levels run low, glucagon activates the carnitine shuttle, which in turn facilitates the use of stored fatty acids for energy. This is truly the only natural way to make the body use fat as fuel, by replacing the primary fuel source (carbohydrate) with the secondary fuel source (fat).

GROWTH HORMONE

Growth hormone levels are also elevated in a low insulin environment. Growth hormone (GH) is highly lipolytic (fat burning) and strengthens your immune system. The reduction of growth hormone is associated with the aging process, and the longer these levels remain elevated throughout your life, the better off you will be.
